IMPLICATIONS:
Require RAD:Requiring RAD presents the case that female students will not take the information as seriously as they might have signing up for it on their own.
Female students might use the information inappropriately, and ruin the focus and safety of the program. A "one size fits all" approach will not work. Colleges and universities are distinct in myriad ways, as are campus public safety agencies and local law enforcement. However, there are established and emerging promising practices related to handling sex crimes. [2] Young black and Hispanic women are more vulnerable to violent crime than their counterparts, as are poor single women with low education levels who live in inner cities--and therefore will not benefit by requiring this at NMU. Do Not Require RAD:Rape is a hate crime, is about power, and anger. It is the logical outcome of an ancient social bias against women, and is the most underreported violent crime on which national statistics are kept. [1]
Gender stereotyping is not just a women's issue. "The idea that males are physically agressive and females are not has distinct drawbacks for both sexes," says novelist Katherine Dunn. "Defining men as the perpetrators of all violence is a viciously immoral judgment of an entire gender. AndDefining women as inherently nonviolent condemns us to the equally restrictive role of sweet, meek, and weak." [1] The most frequently chosen victims are based on opportunity and location. Serial rapists see potential in many situations, and pay attention to body language. They dress as a utility or maintenance worker as a ploy to gain enterance into a home and do this in well-known areas. [1] |
